Engines in vehicles of up to 2,840 kg reference mass with an approval to Regulation No. 83

Engines mounted in vehicles of up to 2,840 kg reference mass with an approval to Regulation No. 83 need no approval to this Regulation. Before this supplement, the sentence ended “has been granted as an extension”.

The following do not need to be approved according to this Regulation: engines mounted in vehicles of up to 2,840 kg reference mass to which an approval to Regulation No. 83 has been granted as an extension.

Extension to variants and versions with a reference mass above 2,380 kg

At the manufacturer’s request, the type approval of a vehicle must be extended to its variants and versions above 2,380 kg reference mass. This applies provided that the vehicle also meets the requirements for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption. For these requirements, the text now refers to Appendix 1 to Annex 12 of the 06 series of amendments to this Regulation. Before this supplement, it referred to paragraph 4.2. of this Regulation.

At the request of the manufacturer, the type approval of a vehicle granted under this Regulation shall be extended to its variants and versions with a reference mass above 2,380 kg provided that it also meets the requirements relating to the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption in accordance with paragraph 4.2. Appendix 1 to Annex 12 of the 06 series of amendments to this Regulation.

New Table A “Applicability”

New Table A “Applicability” gives “R49” or “R49 or R83” by vehicle category and by engine and fuel type. For categories M3 and N3, the cells give “R49”, not “R49 or R83”. Footnote c says that Regulation No. 83 applies for a reference mass ≤ 2,610 kg, and at the manufacturer’s request for ≤ 2,840 kg. Footnote d says the dual-fuel provisions of Regulation No. 49 only apply for vehicles and engines within the scope of revision 5 of that Regulation. Footnotes a and b give the full names Natural Gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

New Table B “Requirements”

New Table B “Requirements” marks with “Yes” or “-” which requirements apply to each engine and fuel type. The rows are gaseous pollutants, particulates, smoke, durability, in-service-conformity and OBD. Footnote a reads “Only applicable to stage C in Table 2 of paragraph 5.2.1.”. Footnote b gives application dates according to paragraph 5.4.2., and footnote c on dual-fuel engines refers to the requirements of Annex 11.

Equivalent approval (paras. 1.2. and 1.2.1.)

Paragraph 1.2. now lists what needs no approval to this Regulation if it is part of a vehicle approved to Regulation No. 83. The list covers compression-ignition engines to be mounted in vehicles of categories N1, N2 and M2 fuelled with diesel. It also covers positive-ignition engines fuelled with NG or LPG to be mounted in vehicles of category N1. It also covers vehicles of categories N1, N2 and M2 fitted with compression-ignition engines fuelled with diesel. It also covers vehicles of category N1 fitted with positive-ignition engines fuelled with NG or LPG. Paragraph 1.2.1. says that equivalent approval as set out in paragraph 1.2. must not be granted in the case of dual-fuel engines and vehicles.

The following do not need to be approved according to this Regulation, if they are part of a vehicle approved according to Regulation No. 83:
Compression-ignition engines to be mounted in vehicles of categories N1, N2 and M2 fuelled with diesel;

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Use Table A, with its footnotes, to check if R49 or R83 applies to each vehicle category and fuel.
  • Check which engines in vehicles up to 2,840 kg reference mass with an R83 approval are exempt from this Regulation.
  • For engines and vehicles that are part of a vehicle approved according to Regulation No. 83, check paragraph 1.2.
  • Do not plan on equivalent approval for dual-fuel engines and vehicles, because paragraph 1.2.1. excludes them.

Component supplier

  • If you supply engines, use Table B to check which requirements apply to each engine and fuel type.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Note that new paragraph 1.2.1. gives no equivalent approval for dual-fuel engines and vehicles.
