Q1What changed109 changes

Front position lamps: number and pairs (para. 6.8.)

Paragraph 6.8.2. now gives the number of front position lamps as two, four or six, instead of two or four. If more than two are fitted, at least one pair must be fixed. The width and height requirements now apply to at least one pair of lamps. Additional pairs need at least 100 mm between inner edges and must be not more than 4,000 mm above the ground. This supplement deletes the rule for two additional lamps on vehicles equipped for portable devices at the front, which may obscure the mandatory lamps. The geometric visibility requirements now apply to the single pair or to the combination of all pairs.

Number: Two or four (see paragraph 6.8.4.2.).Number: Two, four or six.
Arrangement: No individual specifications. If more than two front position lamps are fitted, at least one pair of front position lamps shall be fixed.

Rear position lamps and end-outline marker lamps (paras. 6.9. and 6.12.2.)

Paragraph 6.9.2. now gives the number of rear position lamps as two, four or six, instead of two or more. The width, height and length requirements now apply to at least one pair, and additional pairs have separate limits. The four-lamp rules of paragraph 6.9.5.1. and the duty to fit an extra lamp on parts more than 1,000 mm behind the lamps are deleted. Rear position lamps may be omitted if end-outline marker lamps are installed and meet all installation requirements for rear position lamps. If a rear position lamp is reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator, it may now be switched OFF while that indicator operates. For end-outline marker lamps, paragraph 6.12.2. now reads “Two visible from the front and/or two visible from the rear”.

The rear position lamps may be omitted if end-outline marker lamps are installed and meet all the installation requirements for rear position lamps.
Number: Two or more (see paragraphs 6.9.4.3. and 6.9.5.1.).Number: Two, four or six.

Front and rear retro-reflectors: number and pairs (paras. 6.14., 6.17. and 6.25.)

Paragraphs 6.14.2., 6.17.2. and 6.25.2. now give the number of front and rear retro-reflectors as two, four or six. Six triangular rear retro-reflectors may only be fitted when the overall width of the vehicle, including its tyres, exceeds 2,550 mm. The width and height requirements now apply to at least one pair, and additional pairs must be not more than 2,500 mm above the ground. With more than one pair, at least one pair needs at least 300 mm between inner edges and 15° vertical visibility above the horizontal. If 900 mm is impossible without fixing devices liable to be easily damaged or bent, paragraph 6.14.4.2. now allows up to 1,500 mm, not 1,200. This supplement deletes the rules that allowed four retro-reflectors when the position and visibility requirements could not be met (paras. 6.14.5.1., 6.17.5.1. and 6.25.5.1.).

Presence: Mandatory on vehicles of category T. Optional on vehicles of categories R and S in addition to paragraph 6.25. Prohibited on all other vehicles.
Number: Two, four or six.The performances of these devices shall conform to the requirements concerning Class IA or IB retro-reflectors in UN Regulation No. 3 or 150. Additional retro-reflecting devices and materials (including two retro-reflectors not complying with paragraph 6.14.4. below), are permitted provided they do not impair the effectiveness of the mandatory lighting and light-signalling devices.

Side retro-reflectors and conspicuity markings (paras. 6.15. and 6.21.4.)

Paragraph 6.15.4.3. no longer limits the distance between the rearmost side retro-reflector and the rear of R and S vehicles to 1 m. Paragraph 6.21.4. and its new subparagraphs now give position requirements for conspicuity markings, instead of “No individual specifications”. The marking must be as close as practicable to the extreme outer edge and to the ends of the vehicle. Without overlaps, its elements must have a cumulative horizontal length of at least 80 % of the overall width, or 60 % if that is impossible. Along the length, the marking must reach to within 1,000 mm of each end, excluding the drawbar of trailers. Lower elements must be as low as practicable and upper contour elements as high as practicable, within the vehicle's shape, structure, design and operational requirements.

Optional on all vehicles where conspicuity markings according to paragraph 6.21. are fitted.
Length: One reflector must shall be not more than 3 m from the foremost point of the vehicle, and either the same reflector or a second reflector must shall be not more than 3 m from the rearmost point of the vehicle. For vehicles of category R and S the distance between the rearmost side retro-reflector and the rear of the vehicle shall not exceed 1 m.

Dipped-beam headlamps: visible apparent surface (para. 6.2.5.)

Within the field of the angles α and β, at least 90 % of the apparent surface of the dipped-beam headlamp must be visible. Before, virtually the whole of the apparent surface had to be visible. This rule applies notwithstanding paragraph 5.17 (general provisions on geometric visibility) and related subparagraphs.

Geometric visibility: Defined by angles α and β.
Within Notwithstanding provisions of paragraph 5.17 and related subparagraphs, within this field, virtually the whole at least 90 % of the apparent surface of the lamp shall be visible.

Approval: test vehicle and type-approved lamps (paras. 3.3. and 5.22.)

New paragraph 5.22. requires that all lamps (devices) installed on a vehicle are type approved, where applicable, to the corresponding device UN Regulations. The relevant subparagraphs of paragraph 6. specify these device UN Regulations. Paragraph 3.3. now says that the complete set of lighting and light-signalling equipment on the vehicle for approval tests is as prescribed in paragraph 3.2.2. Under paragraph 3.2.2., the application comes with a list of the devices that the manufacturer intends to form the lighting and signalling equipment.

An unladen vehicle fitted with a complete set of lighting and signalling light-signalling equipment , as prescribed in paragraph 3.2.2. above, and representative of the vehicle type to be approved shall be submitted to the Technical Service conducting approval tests.
All lamps (devices) shall, where applicable, be type approved according to the corresponding device UN Regulations as specified in the relevant subparagraphs of paragraph 6. of this Regulation when installed on a vehicle.

Corrections of references and wording (paras. 2.4.1., 3.2.5. and 6.4.4.2.)

Paragraph 2.4.1. now refers to the definition in paragraph 2.4.2. instead of 2.5.2. Paragraph 3.2.5. now refers to paragraph 2.5 instead of 2.10. for the definition of the apparent surface. In paragraph 6.4.4.2., “an downwards inclination” is now “a downwards inclination”.

"Illuminating surface of a lighting device" (main-beam headlamp, dipped-beam headlamp, front fog lamp, reversing lamp and cornering lamp) means the orthogonal projection of the full aperture of the reflector, or in the case of headlamps with an ellipsoidal reflector of the "projection lens", on a transverse plane. If the lighting device has no reflector, the definition of paragraph 2.5.22.4.2. shall be applied. If the light-emitting surface of the lamp extends over part only of the full aperture of the reflector, then the projection of that part only is taken into account.
