Q1What changed108 changes

Test vehicle, device approval and text corrections (paras. 2.4.1., 3.2.5., 3.3., 5.22., 6.4.4.2.)

Under paragraph 3.3., the unladen vehicle submitted for approval tests must have a complete set of lighting and light-signalling equipment, as prescribed in paragraph 3.2.2. Before, the text said “lighting and signalling equipment” and did not refer to paragraph 3.2.2. New paragraph 5.22.: when installed on a vehicle, all lamps must, where applicable, be type approved to the device UN Regulations specified in paragraph 6. Paragraph 2.4.1. now refers to paragraph 2.4.2. instead of 2.5.2., and paragraph 3.2.5. refers to paragraph 2.5 instead of 2.10. Paragraph 6.4.4.2. now reads “a downwards inclination” instead of “an downwards inclination”.

An unladen vehicle fitted with a complete set of lighting and signalling light-signalling equipment , as prescribed in paragraph 3.2.2. above, and representative of the vehicle type to be approved shall be submitted to the Technical Service conducting approval tests.
All lamps (devices) shall, where applicable, be type approved according to the corresponding device UN Regulations as specified in the relevant subparagraphs of paragraph 6. of this Regulation when installed on a vehicle.

Visible apparent surface of dipped-beam headlamps (para. 6.2.5.)

Within the geometric visibility field of paragraph 6.2.5., at least 90 % of the apparent surface of the lamp must now be visible. Before, virtually the whole of the apparent surface had to be visible in that field. The new rule applies notwithstanding paragraph 5.17 and its related subparagraphs.

Within Notwithstanding provisions of paragraph 5.17 and related subparagraphs, within this field, virtually the whole at least 90 % of the apparent surface of the lamp shall be visible.
Geometric visibility: Defined by angles α and β.

Front position lamps (para. 6.8.)

The number of front position lamps is now two, four or six; before, it was two or four. If more than two front position lamps are fitted, at least one pair must be fixed. The width and height rules now apply to at least one pair, and additional pairs must be not more than 4,000 mm above the ground. For additional pairs, the inner edges of the apparent surfaces must be at least 100 mm apart in the direction of the reference axes. The geometric visibility requirements apply to the single pair or to the combination of all pairs. The old rule for two additional lamps up to 4,000 mm on vehicles equipped for portable devices at the front is deleted.

Number: Two , four or four (see paragraph 6.8.4.2.), type‑approved six, type-approved according to the 02 or subsequent series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 7, or to the 00 or subsequent series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 148.
For additional pairs of front position lamps, not more than 4,000 mm above the ground.

Rear position lamps and end-outline marker lamps (paras. 6.9. and 6.12.2.)

The number of rear position lamps is now two, four or six; before, it was two or more. The rear position lamps may now be omitted if end-outline marker lamps are installed and meet all the installation requirements for rear position lamps. The width, height and length rules now apply to at least one pair; additional pairs must be at most 4,000 mm above the ground. Old paragraph 6.9.5.1. is deleted; it allowed four rear position lamps when the position and visibility requirements could not be met. New text lets a rear position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator be switched OFF for the entire time of indicator operation. For end-outline marker lamps, paragraph 6.12.2. now reads “Two visible from the front and/or two visible from the rear” instead of “and”.

Number: Two , four or more (see paragraphs 6.9.4.3. and 6.9.5.1.), six, type-approved according to the 02 or subsequent series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 7, or to the 00 or subsequent series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 148.
The rear position lamps may be omitted if end-outline marker lamps are installed and meet all the installation requirements for rear position lamps.

Front and rear retro-reflectors (paras. 6.14., 6.17. and 6.25.)

The number of front and rear retro-reflectors is now two, four or six; before, it was two or four. Six rear triangular retro-reflectors may only be fitted when the overall width of the vehicle, including its tyres, exceeds 2,550 mm. The width and height rules now apply to at least one pair, and additional pairs must be not more than 2,500 mm above the ground. With more than one pair, at least one pair needs inner edges at least 300 mm apart and 15° vertical visibility above the horizontal. If signalling panels or signalling foils are fitted under paragraph 6.26., the pairs need not meet the location requirements of the first subparagraph. Old paragraphs 6.14.5.1., 6.17.5.1. and 6.25.5.1. are deleted; they allowed four retro-reflectors when the position and visibility requirements could not be met.

Number: Two , four or four (see paragraph 6.14.5.1.), type‑approved six, type-approved according to the requirements concerning Class IA or IB retro‑reflectors retro-reflectors in the 02 or subsequent series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 3, or in the 00 or subsequent series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 150.
Six rear retro-reflectors may only be fitted when the overall width of the vehicle, including its tyres, exceeds 2,550 mm.

Side retro-reflector length rules (para. 6.15.4.3.)

For categories R and S, the 1 m limit between the rearmost side retro-reflector and the rear of the vehicle is deleted. The other length rules of paragraph 6.15.4.3. keep the same distances, with “shall” instead of “must”.

Length: One reflector must shall be not more than 3 m from the foremost point of the vehicle, and either the same reflector or a second reflector must shall be not more than 3 m from the rearmost point of the vehicle. For vehicles of category R and S the distance between the rearmost side retro-reflector and the rear of the vehicle shall not exceed 1 m.
The distance between two reflectors on the same side of the vehicle must shall not exceed 3 m. If the structure, design or the operational use of the vehicle makes it impossible to comply with such a requirement, this distance may be increased to 4 m.

Position of conspicuity markings (para. 6.21.4.)

Paragraph 6.21.4. had no individual position specifications; it now has width, height and length rules for conspicuity markings. The marking must be as close as practicable to the extreme outer edge and to the ends of the vehicle. The marking must reach to within 1,000 mm of each end of the vehicle, excluding the drawbar for trailers. For width, the cumulative horizontal length of the elements, without overlaps, must be at least 80 % of the overall vehicle width. For length, the cumulative horizontal length without overlaps must be at least 80 % of the vehicle length, excluding the tractor cab or the trailer drawbar. In both cases, the cumulative length may be reduced to 60 % if 80 % is impossible to achieve.

Position No individual specifications.
The cumulative horizontal length of the conspicuity marking elements, as mounted on the vehicle, shall equate to at least 80 % of the overall width of the vehicle, excluding any horizontal overlap of individual elements.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts from the European Agricultural Machinery Association (CEMA)
Working party
GRE, 90th session (April–May 2024)

Reasons

  • The rules on the number and location of front and rear position lamps and front and rear retro-reflectors were adapted for wide vehicles. A vehicle can be wide because of its frame or its tyre configuration, for example twin tyres. In particular, this is intended to guarantee the 400 mm width criterion from the extreme outer edge of the vehicle for the main pair.
