UN R127 — Supplement 2 to the 02 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 199th sessionEntry into force not yet known
What changed
  • The joint friction torque of the upper legform impactor is now set to a minimum of 650 Nm but no more than 850 Nm.
  • Before, it was set to 675 Nm ± 25 Nm.
  • The change is in Annex 4, paragraph 3.5., and Annex 6, paragraph 2.4.1.
Why
  • The expert from Germany prepared the proposal to facilitate a target-orientated quasistatic certification of the upper legform impactor.
  • The torque values of the upper legform impactor change to avoid damaging it during tests.
  • A moderate increase of the maximum torque setting is associated with no higher risk for damage to the impactor or the guidance system. It may reduce the efforts and costs of the certification significantly.

Q1What changed2 changes

Joint friction torque of the upper legform impactor (Annex 4, para. 3.5.; Annex 6, para. 2.4.1.)

In Annex 4, paragraph 3.5., the joint friction torque is now set to a minimum of 650 Nm but no more than 850 Nm. Annex 6, paragraph 2.4.1., now gives the same range. Before, both paragraphs said 675 Nm ± 25 Nm.

The torque limiting joint shall be set so that the longitudinal axis of the front member is vertical at the time of impact with a tolerance of ±2°, with the joint friction torque set to 675 a minimum of 650 Nm ± 25  but no more than 850 Nm.
The impactor shall be mounted to the propulsion and guidance system, by a torque limiting joint. The torque limiting joint shall be set so that the longitudinal axis of the front member is perpendicular to the axis of the guidance system, with a tolerance of ±2°, with the joint friction torque set to 675 a minimum of 650 Nm ± 25 but no more than 850 Nm. The guidance system shall be fitted with low friction guides that allow the impactor to move only in the specified direction of impact, when in contact with the pendulum.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from Germany
Working party
GRSP, 78th session (December 2025)

Reasons

  • The expert from Germany prepared the proposal to facilitate a target-orientated quasistatic certification of the upper legform impactor. This impactor is used for the upper legform to bumper test in Annex 5.

“prepared by the expert from Germany to facilitate a target-orientated quasistatic certification of the upper legform impactor for the upper legform to bumper test, as described in Annex 5 of UN Regulation No. 127”
“with proposals to change the torque values of the upper legform impactor to avoid damaging it during tests”
  • The torque limiting joint is set to a minimum of 650 Nm. The aim is to avoid damages to the upper legform impactor, to further test equipment or to the test stand during severe vehicle impacts. When this setting is exceeded during a vehicle test, the torque limiting joint is released.

“To avoid damages to the upper legform impactor, to further test equipment or to the test stand during severe vehicle impacts, the torque limiting joint is set to a minimum of 650 Nm.”
  • If the permitted maximum value is exceeded during the quasistatic certification test, the pivot bolt and the friction discs have to be removed. Then they have to be prepared again. In some cases they have to be exchanged. In any case, this results in higher efforts and costs.

“In some cases the friction discs and the pivot bolt have to be exchanged. In any case this results in higher efforts and costs.”
  • The maximum torque setting is increased moderately to obtain a broader certification corridor. This is associated with no higher risk for damage to the impactor or the guidance system. But it may reduce the efforts and costs of the certification significantly. For this reason, it is recommended to raise the upper limit to 850 Nm.
