UN R127 — 05 series of amendments

Changes from 04 series of amendments (supplement 4)

WP.29 vote: 200th session (17–20 November 2026)
What changed
  • New Annexes 7 and 8 give a test procedure for Deployable Pedestrian Protection Systems (DPPS) and a simulation procedure for the head impact time (HIT).
  • When a vehicle is tested with DPPS activated, the test conditions and requirements in Annex 7 apply.
  • The transitional provisions for the WAD 2,100 boundary and the BRRL are deleted, together with the extra character after the approval number.
Why
  • The 05 series transposes the DPPS provisions of UN GTR No. 9, Amendment 3 into UN Regulation No. 127.
  • The test procedures for DPPS depend on the deployment status at the time of the head impact, so the head impact time must be known.

Introduction to the 05 series (paras. 0.2. to 0.2.5.)

New paragraphs 0.2. to 0.2.5. explain the 05 series. It takes the DPPS test procedure and the HIT determination simulation from UN GTR No. 9, Amendment 3. A flowchart in the Appendix to Annex 7 gives a general guideline for the assessment of DPPS.

For the 05 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 127
It concerns the transposition of UN GTR No. 9, Amendment 3 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2024/77) on the test procedure for Deployable Pedestrian Protection Systems (DPPS) and the procedure for the head impact time (HIT) determination simulation into UN Regulation No. 127.

DPPS definitions and the detection test area (paras. 2., 2.50. to 2.61.)

New definitions 2.50. to 2.61. cover the DPPS and its timing. For example, they define the deployment module, the detection test area, the HIT and the total response time. New Figure 18 shows how to find the detection test area. For a vehicle with a DPPS, the measurements in chapter 2 must be taken with the system undeployed. Paragraph 2.31. now refers to paragraph 2.29. instead of 2.27.

In case of a vehicle equipped with a deployable pedestrian protection system (DPPS) as defined in paragraph 2.50., the measurements shall be taken with the system undeployed.
The following definitions are specifically related to Deployable Pedestrian Protection Systems (DPPS):

Headform tests with DPPS activated (paras. 5.2. to 5.2.2.)

When a vehicle is tested with DPPS activated, the test conditions and requirements in Annex 7 apply. In paragraphs 5.2.1. and 5.2.2., the HIC requirements now also apply when tested to Annex 7, if applicable. When tested with DPPS activated, the vehicle must be adjusted as the Annex 7 test procedure specifies (Annex 3, paragraph 3.2.). Annex 1, Part 1, paragraph 9.23.1. now refers to Annex 7, paragraph 1.2. for DPPS.

When tested with DPPS activated, the test conditions and requirements in Annex 7 shall apply.
When tested in accordance with Annex 5, paragraphs 3., 4., and 5., and if applicable, Annex 7, the HIC recorded shall not exceed 1,000 over two thirds of the combined bonnet top test area and the windscreen test area. Furthermore, the HIC recorded shall not exceed 1,000 over two-thirds of the bonnet top test area. The HIC for the remaining test areas shall not exceed 1,700 for both headforms. Measuring points located in the cowl monitoring area shall not be taken into consideration to assess the performance requirements stated in this paragraph. The respective test results are used for monitoring purposes only and do not contribute to the one-third and two-third area calculation.

New Annex 7: test procedure for DPPS

Annex 7 lists the prerequisites for testing with the DPPS activated, for example the system specification (paragraph 1.2.) and the sensing system verification. If a prerequisite is not met, the vehicle is tested with the DPPS undeployed. If HIT_d < TRT, the headform test must be dynamic. If HIT_d ≥ TRT, the test may be static or dynamic. Combined tests are also possible. The Appendix to Annex 7 gives a flowchart for the assessment.

Prerequisites
If all of the following prerequisites are met, the vehicle shall be tested with the DPPS activated as intended (as described below) for the entire headform test area.

New Annex 8: head impact time (HIT) determination simulation

Annex 8 gives the computer simulation that finds the HIT over the WAD for a vehicle with a DPPS. It uses Human Body Models qualified to Addendum 5 of M.R.1 and a vehicle speed of 40 km/h. The computed HIT values and the corresponding WADs go into Tables 3 and 4. From these results, graphs with a linear regression line are plotted.

Introduction
An HIT-Determination simulation is a computer simulation for determination of HIT over WAD in the DPPS vehicle model for deriving the test conditions for the assessment of deployable systems as specified in the Annex 7.

Approval number and approval mark (paras. 4.2., 4.4.3., Annex 2)

Paragraph 4.2. now ends after its first sentence. The approval number no longer gets a slash and the letter "T", "E" or "F". Paragraph 4.4.3. on this extra character is deleted. The Annex 2 example now shows an approval to the 05 series of amendments.

An approval number shall be assigned to each type approved in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Agreement (E/ECE/TRANS/505/Rev.3). The section 2 of the approval number shall be supplemented with a slash and one of the following characters as applicable:
the letter "T" for vehicles approved using the specific provisions related to WAD 2,100 boundary in accordance with paragraph 11.19.; or

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts from Germany and the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Working party
GRSP, 79th session (June 2026)

Reasons

  • The 05 series transposes UN GTR No. 9, Amendment 3 into UN Regulation No. 127. This covers the DPPS test procedure and the HIT determination simulation.

    Sources (2)
“It concerns the transposition of UN GTR No. 9, Amendment 3 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2024/77) on the test procedure for Deployable Pedestrian Protection Systems (DPPS) and the procedure for the head impact time (HIT) determination simulation into UN Regulation No. 127.”
“to transpose provisions for Deployable Pedestrian Protection Systems (DPPS) from UN GTR No. 9 into UN Regulation No. 127”
  • The 05 series gives test provisions for vehicles with a DPPS.

    Source
“The intention of the 05 series of amendments is to provide test provisions for vehicles equipped with DPPS.”
  • The test procedures depend on the DPPS deployment status at the time of the head impact. For this reason, the head impact time (HIT) must be determined first.

    Source
“Since those test procedures differ depending on the DPPS deployment status at the time of the head impact, for tests on vehicles equipped with DPPS, the determination of the pedestrian’s head impact time (HIT)”
  • The procedure must also make sure that the pedestrian is detected. It must also give safety when the DPPS does not deploy below the deployment threshold speed.

    Source
“It is also necessary to ensure the pedestrian is properly detected as well as the safety of pedestrians in the cases where the DPPS is not deployed due to vehicle speeds below the deployment threshold during the accident.”
