UN R46 Supplement 8 (04 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 46 (ECE R46) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of devices for indirect vision and of motor vehicles with regard to the installation of these devices.

UN R46 — Supplement 8 to the 04 series of amendments

Supplement 7 → 8

Adopted at the WP.29 180th sessionEntry into force 2020-09-25
What changed
  • When a combined continuous image is allowed, any changes in magnification may now be indicated to the driver using indication lines.
  • Indication lines must not hide information.
  • The text now says “on the same display” instead of “on one display”.
Why
  • Paragraph 16.1.5.2. could be interpreted so that a separation inside the combined field of vision is not allowed.
  • Indication lines could be interpreted as a separation and would then not be allowed.

Q1What changed2 changes

Combined continuous image and indication lines (para. 16.1.5.2.)

If the CMS shows more than one field of vision on the same display (before: “on one display”), non-continuous images must be clearly separated. Fields of vision from different classes of devices may form a combined continuous image if no part of the required field of vision is hidden. Before, this condition said “the required field of vision of different classes”. As before, such a combined image does not need a clear separation of the different fields of vision. Any changes in magnification may now be indicated to the driver using indication lines, and these lines must not hide information. The text also now writes “right-side field of view” with a hyphen.

If the CMS shows more than one field of vision on one the same display, non-continuous images shall be clearly separated from each other. Provided that If the required field of vision of from different classes of devices for indirect vision are shown on the monitor(s) without hiding any part of the required field of vision, a combined continuous image without clear separation is allowed. In this case, a clear separation of the different fields of vision is not necessary and any changes in magnification may be indicated to the driver using indication lines. Indication lines shall not hide information.
Thus, the image of the right side right-side field of view shall be presented to the right of the longitudinal vertical plane through the ocular reference point, defined in paragraph 12.6. The image of the left side field of view shall be presented to the left of the longitudinal vertical plane through the ocular reference point.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturer
Working party
GRSG, 117th session (October 2019)

Reasons

  • The original intention of paragraph 16.1.5.2. allowed different fields of vision on the same display or on a single device. These fields of vision must then be separated so that the driver is able to see each single field of vision.

“The original intention of paragraph 16.1.5.2. allowed different fields of vision to be shown on the same display or on a single device.”
“then those fields of vision must be separated so that the driver is able to see each single field of vision.”
  • Innovations in camera and image processing technology open up a large field of possibilities. This leads manufacturers to offer devices able to show more than one field of vision within the same display, as part of a continuous image. In this case, a clear separation between each field of vision is not desirable nor even possible, because the fields of vision overlap.

  • Paragraph 16.1.5.2. could be interpreted so that a separation inside the combined field of vision is not allowed. Small indicative lines can help the driver to discriminate between changes in M-factors within the display.

“Paragraph 16.1.5.2. can currently be interpreted so that a separation inside the combined field of vision is not allowed.”
“to assist the driver in differentiating between changes in M-factors within the display, small indicative lines can be used to help the driver to discriminate.”
  • Indication lines could be interpreted as a separation and would then not be allowed. Defining the indication lines in the text would allow a combined continuous image with small indication lines to aid discrimination for the driver.

“By defining the indication lines within the text, it would be possible to show a combined continuous image with small indication-lines to aid discrimination for the driver.”

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Decide whether your CMS will use indication lines to show changes in magnification in a combined continuous image.

Component supplier

  • If your CMS uses indication lines for changes in magnification, make sure that they do not hide information.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Check that indication lines in a combined continuous CMS image do not hide information.
