UN R79 Supplement 6 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 79 (ECE R79) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to steering equipment.
UN R79 — Supplement 6 to the 03 series of amendments
Supplement 5 → 6
- What changed
- For RCP based on detection of driver position and movement, continuous driver movement is now an alternative to continuous actuation of the remote-control device. The driver must move in the same longitudinal direction as the vehicle.
- For RCP based on detection of driver position and movement, paragraph 5.6.1.2.3. adds a separate list of cases in which the vehicle must stop immediately.
- In the absence of a lane marking, a system intervention may now exceed the 0.75 m ESF lateral offset on two conditions. The vehicle speed during the whole intervention is below 20 km/h, and the lateral offset rate generated by the system is limited to 2 m/s. This rate is calculated as an average for a time period of 1 s.
- Why
- The proposal aims to allow an alternative to the continuous actuation of the remote-control device.
- The continued movement of the driver is introduced as an alternative means to support driver attentiveness.
- The amendment defines the approval conditions for RCP based on an alternative HMI not necessarily including a hand held device.
Q1What changed20 changes
Definitions of RCP and SRCPmax (paras 2.4.8. and 2.4.9.)
The definition of "Remote Controlled Parking (RCP)" now says that the actuation is made in close proximity to the vehicle. Before this supplement, it said that the actuation is made by remote control in close proximity to the vehicle. The definition of "Specified maximum RCP operating range (SRCPmax)" now adds "or alternatively the driver (for systems based on detection of driver position and movement)" after "the remote control device".
Driver input during the RCP parking manoeuvre (paras 5.6.1.2.1. and 5.6.1.2.2.)
Paragraph 5.6.1.2.2. now requires one of two inputs during the parking manoeuvre. One input is a continuous actuation of the remote-control device by the driver. The other input is a continuous movement of the driver in the same longitudinal direction as the vehicle. This second input is for systems based on detection of driver position and movement. Before this supplement, the text required a continuous actuation of the remote control device by the driver. Paragraph 5.6.1.2.1. now also excludes a direct influence on steering angle, value of acceleration and deceleration by the movement of the driver.
When the vehicle must stop immediately during RCP (para. 5.6.1.2.3.)
Paragraph 5.6.1.2.3. now has one list of cases for each type of RCP system. For systems based on continuous actuation of the remote-control device, the list has the same three cases as the text before this supplement. For systems based on detection of driver position and movement, the vehicle must stop immediately if the continuous movement of the driver is interrupted. It must also stop immediately if the detection of the driver is lost. The same applies if there is a rapid increase in the movement speed of the driver. It must also stop immediately if the distance between vehicle and remote-control device or driver exceeds SRCPmax.
Deactivation and type-approval demonstration for RCP based on driver position and movement (paras 5.6.1.2.9. and 5.6.1.3.1.4.)
New paragraph 5.6.1.2.9. covers RCP systems based on detection of driver position and movement. For them, the deactivation referred to in paragraph 5.6.1.1.3. must be through a simple and obvious action that will be recognised by the system. New paragraph 5.6.1.3.1.4. requires the manufacturer to demonstrate to the technical service during type approval how a person is identified as the driver. The manufacturer must also demonstrate how this person is tracked and how the driver initiates and terminates control. This is subject to agreement of the technical service.
ESF avoidance manoeuvre: leaving the road and lateral offset (paras 5.1.6.2.3. and 5.1.6.2.3.2.)
Paragraph 5.1.6.2.3. says that an automatic avoidance manoeuvre initiated by an ESF must not lead the vehicle to leave the road. The text now adds the words "if applicable for the specified use case according to paragraph 5.1.6.2.10" to this rule. Where a lane marking is absent, paragraph 5.1.6.2.3.2. limits the lateral offset of a single ESF intervention to 0.75 m in that direction. A new sentence says that a system intervention may exceed this 0.75 m on two conditions. First, the vehicle speed during the whole intervention is below 20 km/h. Second, the lateral offset rate generated by the system is limited to 2 m/s, calculated as an average for a time period of 1 s.
ESF test in the absence of lane markings (Annex 8, para. 3.3.4.)
In the test of paragraph 3.3.4., item (c) still accepts a lateral offset of 0.75 m at maximum. Item (c) now adds: if exceeded in case of an intervention below 20 km/h, the lateral offset rate does not exceed 2 m/s. Item (c) now refers to paragraph 5.1.6.2.3.2. instead of paragraph 5.1.6.2.2. Item (d) now adds "if applicable for the specified use case" to the check that the vehicle has not left the road due to the ESF intervention. The heading of paragraph 3.3.4. now ends with a full stop.

“With this proposal the continued movement of the driver is introduced as an alternative means to support driver attentiveness.”
This alternative requires driver engagement and supports the driver to focus on the area around the vehicle.

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- For RCP based on detection of driver position and movement, prepare the demonstration that paragraph 5.6.1.3.1.4. requires.
- Make sure that the vehicle stops immediately in each case that paragraph 5.6.1.2.3. lists for your RCP system type.
- Make deactivation of RCP based on detection of driver position and movement a simple, obvious action the system recognises.
- Check if paragraph 5.1.6.2.3. applies to the specified use case of your ESF according to paragraph 5.1.6.2.10.
- Make sure that any ESF intervention above the 0.75 m lateral offset meets both conditions of paragraph 5.1.6.2.3.2.
