UN R79 Supplement 4 (04 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 79 (ECE R79) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to steering equipment.
UN R79 — Supplement 4 to the 04 series of amendments
Supplement 3 → 4
- What changed
- New text in paragraph 5.6.4.2.3. lets the ACSF of Category C switch automatically to standby mode. This follows an activation request on any type of road by a deliberate action with the same means as for ACSF of Category B1.
- The automatic switch can happen when the system has verified that the road is of a valid type. It must not happen before the vehicle has reached a regular lane of travel.
- An automatic change into the standby mode must be indicated to the driver in a prominent and understandable way. This indication must be different from the optical signal of the standby mode itself, unless an off-mode indication is displayed at least after the activation.
- Why
- With the earlier text, the driver had to operate the means again to activate the ACSF C on an ACSF C eligible road. This applied when the same means was used to activate ACSF B1 and ACSF C on a non-eligible road. This second deliberate action is confusing for the driver.
- The proposed wording permits a logical cascade of actions from the activation on a non-eligible road to a lane change on an eligible road.
- GRVA could not identify a fixed time value for a delay. It agreed that such a value could be subject to agreement between the manufacturer and the technical service during the approval process.
Q1What changed4 changes
Automatic switch of the ACSF of Category C to standby mode (para. 5.6.4.2.3.)
New text in paragraph 5.6.4.2.3. covers an activation request on any type of road. The request is made by a deliberate action with the same means as for ACSF of Category B1. After such a request, the ACSF of Category C may switch automatically to standby mode. This applies notwithstanding the activation and transition criteria above. Condition (a): the system has verified that the road is of a valid type as described above. Condition (b): to avoid distraction to the driver, the switch must not happen before the vehicle has reached a regular lane of travel.
Indication of an automatic change into the standby mode (para. 5.6.4.5.2.)
New text in paragraph 5.6.4.5.2. covers an automatic change into the standby mode as defined in paragraph 5.6.4.2.3. This change must be indicated to the driver in a prominent and understandable way. The indication must be different from the optical signal of the standby mode itself, for example an additional popup message or a blinking indication. This difference is not necessary if an off-mode indication is displayed at least after the activation.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by

- GRVA, 15th session (January 2023)
Reasons
The same means can activate ACSF B1 and ACSF C at the same time. On a road that is not eligible for ACSF C, only the ACSF B1 is activated. With the earlier text, the driver then had to operate the means again to activate the ACSF C on an ACSF C eligible road. This second deliberate action is confusing for the driver, because it makes the manipulation more complex. The earlier wording discourages most drivers from using this assistance function.

“But if the road is non-eligible to ACSF C, then only the ACSF B1 is activated.”
“once the vehicle moves to an ACSF C eligible road, the driver must operate again the means to activate the ACSF C. This second deliberate action is confusing for the driver since it makes the manipulation more complex.”
“The current wording actually discourages most drivers from using this assistance function.”
The proposed wording permits a logical cascade of actions. First, the driver does a deliberate action to activate ACSF B1 and ACSF C on a non-eligible road. Then the driver drives into an eligible road and is clearly informed of this. Then the driver starts a lane change procedure, for example with the direction indicator.

“The proposed wording permits the following, logical, cascade of actions:”
“The driver has done a deliberate action to activate ACSF B1 and ACSF C (on a non-eligible road); then”
“He drives into an eligible road, and is clearly informed thereof; then”
“He initiates a lane change procedure by activating e.g. the direction indicator.”
GRVA agreed that a “suitable time delay” was one option to make sure that the vehicle has already reached a regular lane of travel. But GRVA could not identify a fixed time value. It therefore agreed that such a value could be subject to agreement between the manufacturer and the technical service during the approval process.

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- If your ACSF of Category C switches automatically to standby mode, check conditions (a) and (b) of paragraph 5.6.4.2.3.
- Make sure that the driver gets a prominent and understandable indication of an automatic change into the standby mode.
- Make this indication different from the optical signal of the standby mode itself. This is not necessary if an off-mode indication is displayed at least after the activation.
Component supplier
- If you supply ACSF of Category C control software, check the automatic switch to standby mode against paragraph 5.6.4.2.3.
- Make sure that the switch does not happen before the vehicle has reached a regular lane of travel.
Technical service / Approval authority
- For ACSF of Category C, check the automatic switch to standby mode against conditions (a) and (b) of paragraph 5.6.4.2.3.
- Check that the automatic switch does not happen before the vehicle has reached a regular lane of travel.
- Check that an automatic change into the standby mode is indicated to the driver in a prominent and understandable way.
