UN R48 Supplement 6 (07 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 48 (ECE R48) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to the installation of lighting and light-signalling devices.
UN R48 — Supplement 6 to the 07 series of amendments
Supplement 5 → 6
- What changed
- Lighting units for AFS passing beam may now also produce Driver Assistance Projection, as the adaptive main beam could before (para. 6.22.9.2.).
- Except for the wrong way warning and risk of collision warning, the projection must not be switched ON below 65 km/h (para. 5.35.10.).
- Paragraph 5.10.4.3. gives the in-case-of-doubt check for red light to the front and/or white light to the rear. It now says “not more than” 0.25 cd per lamp instead of “less than”.
- Why
- Some Contracting Parties asked to allow Driver Assistance Projection with the AFS passing beam, in addition to the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB).
- The speed threshold responds to concerns about possible disturbance or distraction, particularly for vulnerable road users in urban areas.
- OICA proposed the 0.25 cd change to align UN Regulation No. 48 with the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulations Nos. 148 and 149.
Q1What changed38 changes
Projection with the AFS passing beam (para. 6.22.9.2. and Annex 1, item 9.22.)
New paragraph 6.22.9.2. says that lighting units for AFS passing beam and/or adaptive main beam may produce Driver Assistance Projection. The projection is to warn the driver appropriately regarding special traffic situations or conditions. Before this supplement, the projection rule named only the adaptive main beam. In Annex 1, items 9.22.1. to 9.22.3.1. now give yes/no entries for AFS passing-beam, AFS main-beam and AFS adaptive main-beam (ADB). Two of these entries are for AFS passing-beam and ADB with Driver Assistance Projection. Before, items 9.22.1. and 9.22.1.1. were for main-beam ADB, without and with Driver Assistance Projection.
Speed limits for the projection (para. 5.35.10.)
Paragraph 5.35.10. is new. Except for the wrong way warning and risk of collision warning, the projection must not be switched ON at vehicle speeds below 65 km/h. When the projection is already switched ON, it may remain switched ON as long as the vehicle speed remains above 40 km/h.
General provisions on Driver Assistance Projection (para. 5.35.)
New paragraph 5.35.3. permits neither flashing nor transforming of the projection, unless expressly allowed for the use cases described under the conditions in Annex 16. New paragraphs 5.35.8. and 5.35.9. contain the rule on the Field of Vision Assistant and the rule on the windshield wiper. Before this supplement, these three rules were in paragraphs 6.22.9.3.2.2. to 6.22.9.3.2.4., which are deleted. The wiper rule now says “shall not be switched ON” where the old text said “shall not operate”. In paragraph 5.35.7., which was 5.35.6., the failure condition now says “the visual information on the road given by the Driver Assistance Projection”. Former paragraphs 5.35.3. to 5.35.5. are now paragraphs 5.35.4. to 5.35.6.
Lateral distance of the projection (para. 5.35.11.)
Under new paragraph 5.35.11., the lateral distance from the outer edges of the projection must not be more than 1,250 mm. The reference can be the longitudinal median plane or the trajectory of the centre of gravity of the vehicle. Before this supplement, paragraph 6.22.9.3.2.1. named only the trajectory of the centre of gravity of the vehicle. The manufacturer must demonstrate the distance by calculation or by other means accepted by the Type Approval Authority.
Driver Assistance Projection in the AFS demonstration and test drive (para. 6.22.9.3.)
The applicant must now also demonstrate compliance of Driver Assistance Projection, if any, with paragraph 5.35. and its sub-paragraphs (new point (c) of paragraph 6.22.9.3.1.). If Driver Assistance Projection is present, the technical service must check during the test drive that this feature does not cause any distraction (para. 6.22.9.3.2.). The overall performance of the automatic control that the applicant must demonstrate now includes Driver Assistance Projection, if installed (para. 6.22.9.3.3.).
New numbers in paragraph 6.22.9. and updated references
Former paragraph 6.22.9.2. and its sub-paragraphs are now paragraph 6.22.9.3. and its sub-paragraphs. Former paragraph 6.22.9.3. is now 6.22.9.4., and former paragraph 6.22.9.3.1. and its sub-paragraphs are now 6.22.9.4.1. and its sub-paragraphs. Former paragraphs 6.22.9.4. and 6.22.9.5. are now 6.22.9.5. and 6.22.9.6. Paragraph 3.2.6.5. now refers to paragraph 6.22.9.3., and paragraph 6.22.7.1.2. now refers to paragraph 6.22.9.4. A table entry for an oncoming bicycle now refers to paragraph 6.22.9.4.1.2.
Red light to the front and white light to the rear: 0.25 cd per lamp (para. 5.10.4.3.)
The in-case-of-doubt rule in paragraph 5.10.4.3. is about the red light emitted to the front and/or the white light emitted to the rear. In case of doubt, the requirement is deemed fulfilled if the luminous intensity is not more than 0.25 cd per lamp. The intensity is as verified during type approval of the lamps, taking into account the influence of the vehicle body if applicable. Before this supplement, the intensity had to be less than 0.25 cd per lamp.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Experts from the International Automotive Lighting and Light-Signalling Expert Group (GTB) and experts from OICA
- Working party
- GRE, 88th session (April 2023)
Reasons
Some Contracting Parties asked to allow Driver Assistance Projection with the AFS passing beam, in addition to the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB).
Source
“This proposal is intended to allow Driver Assistance Projection on the road surface by using the AFS passing beam, in addition to the current possibility to use the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB), as requested by some Contracting Parties.”
Some Contracting Parties raised concerns about possible disturbance or distraction, particularly for vulnerable road users in urban areas. For this purpose, a threshold based on vehicle speed was considered suitable.

“concerns were raised by some Contracting Parties about possible disturbance/distraction, particularly for vulnerable road users during the circulation in urban areas.”
“For this purpose, it has been considered suitable to introduce a threshold based on vehicle speed.”
The rules from paragraph 6.22.9.3.2. and its sub-paragraphs are moved to the general provisions in paragraph 5.35. The change to paragraph 5.35.7. makes clear that “visual information” means only the projection on the road.
Sources (2)
“Paragraph 6.22.9.3.2. and its sub-paragraphs are deleted, as they have been transferred to paragraph 5.35. “General provisions relating to Driver Assistance Projection”.”
“Paragraph 5.35.7. is modified in order to clarify the meaning of ‘visual information’, by explaining that it is restricted to the Driver Assistance Projection on the road.”
The changes to paragraph 6.22.9.3., which was 6.22.9.2., add the verification of Driver Assistance Projection to the test of AFS automatic operation. The possible distraction is to be checked during the test drive.
