UN R48 — Supplement 6 to the 08 series of amendments

Supplement 5 → 6

Adopted at the WP.29 195th sessionEntry into force 2025-09-26
What changed
  • New paragraph 5.35.12.1. sets the width limits for a Driver Assistance Projection for predicted trajectory, with a maximum of 2,600 mm.
  • At the manufacturer's choice, the failure tell-tale may be activated by a failure signal of UN Regulation No. 149, 01 and later series.
  • For headlamp cleaning, the 2,000 lumens limit of paragraph 6.2.9.2. now applies to at least one headlamp, not to each headlamp.
Why
  • The proposal states that the predicted trajectory projection will improve road safety by giving valuable assistance to the driver.
  • The failure requirements for passing beams that use multiple light sources needed to be extended and improved for new technologies.
  • The changes to paragraphs 6.2.9.2., 6.2.9.3. and 6.22.9.1. are intended to align UN Regulation No. 48 with the 01 series of UN Regulation No. 149.

Q1What changed15 changes

Predicted trajectory projection (paras. 5.35.10. to 5.35.12.1.)

Paragraph 5.35.10. adds predicted trajectory to the exceptions from the 65 km/h switch-ON limit. Paragraph 5.35.11. limits the lateral distance from the outer edges of the projection to 1,250 mm. The distance is with respect to the longitudinal median plane or to the trajectory of the centre of gravity of the vehicle. This limit now does not apply to predicted trajectory. For predicted trajectory illustrated in Annex 16, the projection may be adapted according to the predicted trajectory of the vehicle's centre of gravity. It must not be wider than the width of the vehicle, including any fitted accessories and trailer if applicable, and not more than 2,600 mm.

Except for the wrong way warning , predicted trajectory and risk of collision warning, Driver Assistance Projection shall not be switched ON when the vehicle speed is below 65 km/h. However, when the projection is already switched ON, it may remain switched ON as long as the vehicle speed remains above 40 km/h.
The Except for predicted trajectory, the lateral distance from the outer edges of the Driver Assistance Projection with respect to the longitudinal median plane or to the trajectory of the centre of gravity of the vehicle shall not be more than 1,250 mm.

Predicted trajectory in Annex 16

Annex 16 now lists “Predicted trajectory”. Its figure shows an example of the basic quadrilateral shape of the projection, seen from the driver’s perspective of a car in straight forward motion. The dashed lines in the figure are not part of the projection. The shape may change when adapted in conformity with paragraph 5.35.12.

This figure is showing an example of the basic quadrilateral shape of the Driver Assistance Projection for predicted trajectory, as seen from the driver’s perspective of a car in straight forward motion. The dashed lines are not part of the projection. They are a representation of the lines delineating the lane on which the vehicle is travelling, and only added to clarify the image and lateral boundaries of the predicted trajectory projection. Predicted trajectory This shape may change when adapted in conformity with the requirements in paragraph 5.35.12.

Demonstration of compliance (para. 5.35.13.)

Compliance with paragraphs 5.35.11. and 5.35.12.1. must be demonstrated by the manufacturer by calculation or by other means accepted by the Type Approval Authority. Before this supplement, the sentence began “This shall be demonstrated” and did not name the paragraphs.

This Compliance with paragraphs 5.35.11. and 5.35.12.1. shall be demonstrated by the manufacturer by calculation or by other means accepted by the Type Approval Authority.

Failure tell-tale for the principal dipped-beam (para. 6.2.8.2.)

Paragraph 6.2.8.2. now says “A tell-tale indicating failure” instead of “A visual failure tell-tale”. Item (b) of the activation conditions now gives two options at the discretion of the manufacturer. The first option is a failure of any one of the LED module(s) producing the principal dipped-beam, as before. This option excludes LED modules wired so that the failure of any one LED module causes all of them to stop emitting light. The new second option is a failure signal in accordance with paragraph 4.13. of UN Regulation No. 149 (01 and later series). In any case, once activated, the tell-tale must remain activated while the failure is present.

A visual tell-tale indicating failure tell-tale , whether flashing or not , is mandatory:

Headlamp cleaning and light source modules (paras. 6.2.9.2., 6.2.9.3. and 6.22.9.1.)

Paragraphs 6.2.9.2. and 6.2.9.3. now say “light source(s) and/or light source module(s)” instead of “a light source or LED module(s)”. Paragraph 6.2.9.2. now applies the 2,000 lumens limit to “at least one headlamp”. Before this supplement, it said “for each headlamp”. In paragraph 6.22.9.1., the AFS condition now refers to the flux of the “light source(s) and/or light source module(s)” of the units. The limit now reads “2,000 lm at least on one side” instead of “2,000 lm per side”.

Dipped-beam headlamps with a light source(s) and/or light source or LED module(s) producing the principal dipped-beam dipped beam having a total objective luminous flux for each at least one headlamp which exceeds 2,000 lumens shall only be installed in conjunction with the installation of headlamp cleaning device(s) according to UN Regulation No. 45.
With respect to vertical inclination the provisions of paragraph 6.2.6.2.2. above shall not be applied for dipped-beam headlamps with a light source(s) and/or light source or LED module(s) producing the principal dipped beam and having an objective luminous flux for each headlamp which exceeds 2,000 lumens.

Cut-off inclination for off-road vehicles (para. 6.2.6.1.2.)

For N2G, N3G, M2G and M3G (off-road) vehicles with headlamps above 1,200 mm, the cut-off inclination limits are -1.5 and -3.5 per cent. Categories N2G, M2G and M3G are new in this sentence. Before this supplement, it said “For category N3G (off-road) vehicles”.

For category N2G, N3G , M2G, M3G (off-road) vehicles where the headlamps exceed a height of 1,200 mm, the limits for the vertical inclination of the cut-off shall be between: -1.5 per cent and -3.5 per cent.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts from the International Automotive Lighting and Light-Signalling Expert Group (GTB)
Working party
GRE, 91st session (October 2024)

Reasons

  • The proposal states that the projection of a predicted trajectory will improve road safety by giving valuable assistance to the driver. The proposal also states that other means, such as a heads-up display (HUD) or the dashboard, cannot give this feature to the driver.

    Sources (2)
“The projection of a predicted trajectory will improve road safety by providing valuable assistance to the driver while driving the vehicle.”
“this DAP is a feature that cannot be provided to the driver by other means, such as a heads-up display (HUD) or dashboard.”
  • Passing beams with a large number of elements for visible radiation are now available. A failure of any first of these elements does not lead to a lack of performance in photometric values. For this reason, the failure requirements for passing beams with multiple light sources need to be extended and improved.

    Sources (2)
“passing beams constituted of a large number of elements for visible radiation are presently available, where a failure of any first of these does not consequentially lead to a lack of performance in photometric values.”
“the requirements regarding failures in passing beam using multiple light sources need to be extended and improved.”
  • The latest provisions in the 01 series of UN Regulation No. 149 require the communication form to show whether the dipped-beam flux exceeds 2,000 lumens. This covers the total objective luminous flux of one or more light source(s) or light source module(s). UN Regulation No. 48 referred only to a light source or LED module(s) for the dipped beam. The changes are intended to align UN Regulation No. 48 with these updated requirements, to avoid inconsistencies.

    Sources (3)
“require to indicate in the communication form whether or not the total objective luminous flux of one or more light source(s) or light source module(s) for a dipped beam exceeds 2,000 lumens.”
“However, UN Regulation No. 48 presently refers only to a light source or ligh-emitting diode (LED) module(s) for dipped beam”
“The proposed modifications are intended to align the requirements in UN Regulation No. 48 with the updated requirements in the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 149”
  • The term “LED module” is replaced by “Light source module” for reasons of technological neutrality. The words “at least” in paragraphs 6.2.9.2. and 6.22.9.1. adapt these provisions to the “matched pair” requirements for headlamps and AFS.

    Sources (2)
“The term “LED module” has been replaced by “Light source module” for technological neutralty reasons.”
“The addition of the words “at least’’ in paragraphs 6.2.9.2. and 6.22.9.1. is necessary to adapt the application of this provisions to the introduction of “matched pair” requirements for headlamps and AFS.”
  • The 09 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 48 clarified the passing-beam vertical inclination requirements for M2G, M3G, N2G and N3G (off-road) vehicles. The proposal is intended to align these requirements by extending the 09 series provisions to the 06, 07 and 08 series of amendments.

    Sources (2)
“The 09 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 48 has clarified the requirements for M2G, M3G, N2G and N3G (off-road) vehicles about the passing-beam vertical inclination depending on the mounting height of the headlamps.”
“This proposal is intended to align these requirements among the different series of amendments by extending the provisions in the 09 series to the 06, 07 and 08 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 48.”
