UN R67 Supplement 3 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 67 (ECE R67) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of: I. Specific equipment of vehicles of category M and N using liquefied petroleum gases in their propulsion system II. Vehicles of category M and N fitted with specific equipment for the use of liquefied petroleum gases in their propulsion system with regard to the installation of such equipment.
UN R67 — Supplement 3 to the 03 series of amendments
Supplement 2 → 3
- What changed
- Paragraphs 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2. now refer to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 and add the words “at least the minimum”.
- ISO20653:2013 is a new alternative: IP40 inside the boot and passengers compartment, and IP5K4 for all other electrical connections.
- The requirement for the filling unit of M1 vehicles moves from paragraph 6.17.10.9. to new paragraph 17.10.3. with the same text.
- Why
- The proposal aims to align the IP protection grades with the latest IEC standard and to recognize ISO 20653 as a valid alternative.
- IP classes with higher protection grades than the Regulation specifies can also be accepted.
- No new technical requirement affects the filling unit as a component, so the proposal moves the installation requirement to Part II of the Regulation.
Q1What changed3 changes
IP protection class of electrical connections (paras. 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2.)
Electrical connections inside the boot and passengers compartment must have at least class IP 40 under IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013, or IP40 under ISO20653:2013. All other electrical connections must have at least class IP 54 under IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013, or IP5K4 under ISO20653:2013. The words “at least the minimum” are new. Before, the text named only IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999, with no ISO alternative.
Filling unit of M1 vehicles (new para. 17.10.3.)
Paragraph 6.17.10.9. is deleted, and its requirement is now new paragraph 17.10.3. For vehicles of category M1, the filling unit must not be located below the body of the vehicle. It must also respect the height provisions of paragraph 17.4.5. Only the paragraph number changes, not the text. Paragraph 17.10.3. is in section 17, on the installation of LPG equipment in the propulsion system of a vehicle.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from Liquid Gas Europe (paras. 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2.) and expert from Italy (para. 17.10.3.)

- GRSG, 124th session (October 2022)
Reasons
The proposal aims to align the IP protection grades with the latest IEC standard. It also aims to recognize ISO 20653 as a valid alternative, which is more appropriate and focused on automotive applications.

“The first aims to align the requirements of IP protection grades to the latest IEC standard and to recognise ISO 20653 as a valid alternative, which is more appropriate and focused on automotive applications.”
“to align the Ingress Protection degree class to the latest International Electrotechnical Commission standard and to recognise ISO 20653 as a valid alternative”
IP classes with higher protection grades than the Regulation specifies can also be accepted. This includes water protection grades 7, 8 and 9K, which IEC and ISO standards do not automatically recognize.
Source
“all IP classes with protection grades higher than those specified by the regulation can be accepted to comply with the requirements, including the following grades which are not automatically recognised by IEC and ISO standards”
Automotive connectors are usually certified to water protection grade 7, 8 or 9K. These connectors perform better than grade 4, which protects against splash water only.

“Automotive connectors are usually certified according to one of the above-mentioned grades and have better performances than grade 4 which ensures protection to splash water only.”
The requirement that aims to prevent the installation of the filling unit under the body of M1 vehicles was in Part I of the Regulation. Part I gives specifications of various components of the LPG system.

“aims to prevent the installation of the filling unit under the body of M1 vehicles”
“However, the above requirement is placed in part I of the Regulation, which defines specifications of various components of the LPG system.”
No new technical requirement affects the filling unit as a component. For this reason, the proposal moves the installation requirement to Part II, as a new subparagraph of paragraph 17.10. on the filling unit.

“Since no new technical requirement affects the filling unit as a component, the installation requirement shall be moved to part II of the UN Regulation”
“the above-mentioned paragraph should be moved to section II as a new subparagraph of 17.10., which deals with the installation requirements of the filling unit”

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Compare the IP data for the electrical connections of LPG equipment with the new IEC and ISO references.
- Update your documents that refer to paragraph 6.17.10.9. on the filling unit. The paragraph number is now 17.10.3.
Component supplier
- Compare the IP test reports for your electrical connections with IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013.
- If you use ISO20653:2013, make sure that connections inside the boot and passengers compartment meet IP40.
- If you use ISO20653:2013, make sure that all other electrical connections meet IP5K4.
Technical service / Approval authority
- Check the IP class of electrical connections against IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 or ISO20653:2013.
- Treat IP 40 and IP 54 as minimum classes, because paragraphs 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2. now say “at least the minimum”.
- Update references to paragraph 6.17.10.9. in your checklists to the new paragraph 17.10.3.
