Q1What changed30 changes
Approval numbers in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Agreement (paras 5.2. and 16.2.)
Paragraph 5.2. now says an approval number must be assigned to each type of equipment approved in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Agreement (E/ECE/TRANS/505/Rev.3). Paragraph 16.2. now says the same for each type of vehicle approved. Before, both paragraphs said what the first two digits of the approval number indicate. These words are now deleted. Paragraph 5.2. also no longer says that the same Contracting Party must not assign this alphanumeric code to another type of equipment.
Identification of LPG-fuelled vehicles of categories M2/N2 and M3/N3 (paras 17.1.8. and 17.1.8.1.)
Paragraph 17.1.8.1. now says that vehicles of categories M2/N2 and M3/N3 must be labelled as specified in Annex 17. Before, vehicles of category M2 and M3 had to carry a plate as specified in Annex 17. The heading of paragraph 17.1.8. is now “Identification of LPG-fuelled vehicles”, without the words “M2 and M3 category”. The title of Annex 17 now names LPG identification marks for vehicles of categories M2/N2 and M3/N3. Before, the title named the LPG identification mark for M2 and M3 category vehicles.
Where the labels are placed (para. 17.1.8.2.)
The labels must now be placed on the front and on the left side as well as on the right side of the vehicle. For the side, the label is placed in vicinity of a front door if available; otherwise on the first third of the vehicle length. In addition, for vehicles of category M2 and M3, a label must be fixed to the rear of the vehicle. Before, the plate had to be installed on the front and rear of the M2 or M3 category vehicle. It also had to be on the outside of the doors on the left-hand side for right hand drive vehicles. For left hand drive vehicles, it had to be on the outside of the doors on the right-hand side.
Label zones and ISO 17840-4:2018 layout and symbols (Annex 17)
The figure in Annex 17 is replaced. The text now speaks of “the label” in place of “the sign” that “consists of a sticker”. The label must be weather resistant. New text says that the centre zone indicates the first energy source and the upper zone indicates the second energy source. The left zone indicates the gas behaviour due to density, and the right zone indicates the state of aggregation of stored gaseous fuel. Layout and symbols must be in accordance with ISO 17840-4:2018.
Label colours and dimensions (Annex 17)
The colour and dimension requirements now apply to “the label” in place of “the sticker”. The background must now be “Green, RGB code 0, 176, 80”, in place of “green”. The border and letters must now be white reflecting, not “white or white reflecting”; the letters rule now also covers symbols. The sticker width must now be ≥ 110 mm, in place of 110 - 150 mm. The sticker height must now be ≥ 80 mm, in place of 80 - 110 mm. The requirements for border width, character height and character thickness, and for the word “LPG” centred in the middle of the sticker, are deleted.
Acceptance of type approvals after the 04 series of amendments enters into force (paras 22.19. to 22.21.)
Paragraph 22.19. applies as from the official date of entry into force of the 04 series of amendments. From that date, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must not refuse to grant or refuse to accept type approvals under the 03 series of amendments. Paragraph 22.20. covers type approvals to the preceding series of amendments, first issued after 1 September 2023. As from 1 September 2023, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation are not obliged to accept these approvals. Paragraph 22.21. covers type approvals to the preceding series of amendments, first issued before 1 September 2023. Until 1 September 2025, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must accept these approvals.
Type approvals to the preceding series of amendments as from 1 September 2025 (paras 22.22. and 22.23.)
Under paragraph 22.22., Contracting Parties applying this Regulation are not obliged to accept type approvals issued to the preceding series of amendments. This applies as from 1 September 2025. Paragraph 22.23. applies notwithstanding paragraph 22.22. Under paragraph 22.23., Contracting Parties applying the UN Regulation must continue to accept UN type-approvals issued according to the preceding series of amendments. This applies to the vehicles / vehicle systems / vehicle components which are not affected by the changes introduced by the 04 series of amendments.
