UN R67 — Supplement 2 to the 04 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 189th sessionEntry into force 2023-09-24
What changed
  • Paragraphs 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2. now refer to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 and add the words “at least the minimum”.
  • ISO20653:2013 is a new alternative: IP40 for electrical connections inside the boot and passengers compartment, and IP5K4 for all other electrical connections.
  • The requirement for the filling unit of M1 vehicles moves from paragraph 6.17.10.9. to new paragraph 17.10.3.
Why
  • The proposal aims to align the IP protection grades with the latest IEC standard and to recognise ISO 20653 as a valid alternative.
  • All IP classes with protection grades higher than those that the Regulation specifies can be accepted to comply with the requirements.
  • No new technical requirement affects the filling unit as a component, so the proposal moves the installation requirement to part II of the Regulation.

Q1What changed3 changes

Protection degree class of electrical connections (paras 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2.)

The rules for electrical operated devices containing LPG aim to prevent electric sparks on the surface of fracture if the component fractures. Electrical connections inside the boot and passengers compartment must comply with at least the minimum protection degree class IP 40 according to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013. As an alternative, they can comply with IP40 according to ISO20653:2013. All other electrical connections must comply with at least the minimum class IP 54 according to the same IEC Standard, or IP5K4 according to ISO20653:2013. Before this supplement, the classes were IP 40 and IP 54 according to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999. The words “at least the minimum” are new.

The electrical connections inside the boot and passengers compartment shall comply with at least the minimum protection degree class IP 40 according to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:199960529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 or IP40 according to ISO20653:2013.
All other electrical connections shall comply with at least the minimum protection degree class IP 54 according to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:199960529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 or IP5K4 according to ISO20653:2013.

Filling unit of M1 vehicles (new para. 17.10.3.)

The requirement for the filling unit of M1 vehicles moves from paragraph 6.17.10.9. to new paragraph 17.10.3., in part II of the Regulation. For vehicles of category M1, the filling unit must not be located below the body of the vehicle. The filling unit must also respect the height provisions of paragraph 17.4.5.

Working party
GRSG, 124th session (October 2022)

Reasons

  • The proposal aims to align the requirements of IP protection grades with the latest IEC standard. It also aims to recognise ISO 20653 as a valid alternative, which is more appropriate and focused on automotive applications.

“The first aims to align the requirements of IP protection grades to the latest IEC standard and to recognise ISO 20653 as a valid alternative, which is more appropriate and focused on automotive applications.”
“to align the Ingress Protection degree class to the latest International Electrotechnical Commission standard and to recognise ISO 20653 as a valid alternative”
  • All IP classes with protection grades higher than those that the Regulation specifies can be accepted to comply with the requirements. This includes water protection grades 7, 8 and 9K, which IEC and ISO standards do not automatically recognise.

    Sources (4)
“all IP classes with protection grades higher than those specified by the regulation can be accepted to comply with the requirements, including the following grades which are not automatically recognised by IEC and ISO standards”
“Water protection grade 7: temporary immersion”
“Water protection grade 8: continuous immersion”
“Water protection grade 9K: water during high-pressure/steam-jet cleaning”
  • Automotive connectors are usually certified according to one of these grades. They have better performance than grade 4, which ensures protection to splash water only.

“Automotive connectors are usually certified according to one of the above-mentioned grades and have better performances than grade 4 which ensures protection to splash water only.”
  • The requirement that aims to prevent the installation of the filling unit under the body of M1 vehicles was in part I of the Regulation. Part I defines specifications of various components of the LPG system.

    Sources (2)
“aims to prevent the installation of the filling unit under the body of M1 vehicles”
“However, the above requirement is placed in part I of the Regulation, which defines specifications of various components of the LPG system.”
  • No new technical requirement affects the filling unit as a component. For this reason, the proposal moves the installation requirement to part II. The proposal says that the paragraph should be moved as a new subparagraph of 17.10., which deals with the installation requirements of the filling unit.

    Sources (2)
“Since no new technical requirement affects the filling unit as a component, the installation requirement shall be moved to part II of the UN Regulation”
“the above-mentioned paragraph should be moved to section II as a new subparagraph of 17.10., which deals with the installation requirements of the filling unit”

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • For electrical operated devices containing LPG, check each electrical connection against the amended paragraphs 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2.
  • If you use ISO20653:2013, make sure that electrical connections inside the boot and passengers compartment comply with IP40.
  • If you use ISO20653:2013, make sure that all other electrical connections comply with IP5K4.
  • Update the documents that refer to paragraph 6.17.10.9. for the filling unit of M1 vehicles. Refer to paragraph 17.10.3. instead.

Component supplier

  • Make sure that your connector documents give the protection class according to IEC Standard 60529-1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 or ISO20653:2013.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Be ready to check electrical connections against the ISO20653:2013 classes in paragraphs 6.17.2.1. and 6.17.2.2.
  • For M1 vehicles, check the filling unit against paragraph 17.10.3. in place of paragraph 6.17.10.9.
